The Vestibule

The neutral order at the city's edge.

They neither keep nor take. They study the door, channel its energy, and sell passage through time and distance for a toll paid in self.

Good and dangerous in equal measure, the Vestibule brokers the marks travelers buy to jump. Each toll spends a measure of self, a memory, a sense, a year, a name. They read the souls in Bram's skin and recoil, calling him a soul-taker, then look again and understand he is their keeper. Their elder is the first person to treat him as a man and not a larder.
