Keepers

Those who carry the dead.

A Keeper carries real dead in the marks on their skin, and lets them live alongside the living rather than consuming them.

A Keeping is a memorial tattoo that holds real dead. The bearer is a Keeper, the order's older word for it a Rememberer. To keep is to share a body with the dead by consent, both still themselves. It costs the bearer room, and weight, and the long work of not looking away. Bram never asked to keep anyone. By the end of the worst week of his life he has to choose whether he can.
