Antwerp

The Vestibule The neutral order at the city's edge. They neither keep nor take. They study the door, channel energy, and broker passage for a toll of self. The Bar A low room with the light the colour of weak tea. Where a dying stranger bought Bram a drink and laid a whole family on his skin. The Flats of the Dead Twelve years of rooms where people died alone. Sell, skip, scrub. The work that taught Bram not to look. The Scheldt The cold river through Antwerp, running to the sea. Water keeps, in its own way, and the city's dead were always near it. The Flat Bram's rooms in Antwerp, and the foxed mirror that came with them, screwed to the hall wall a hand too high. It is where he first reads the family on his own skin. The Port The machine north of the city: cranes, container stacks, the reverse-beep of something backing up in the dark. It drones under every night of Bram's worst week, and it does not stop for anyone. Noor's Kitchen The warm room where the kettle lives, and the one place in the city that has always been safe. Until a courteous woman sits down in its warmest corner and makes Bram an offer. The Dock-Cut Footbridge An iron footbridge over the old dock cut, where the new flats give out and the brick goes black. Lean on its rail long enough and a mill comes up under your hands, its wheel turning the water white, and with it the man who kept the lock below.

The Drowned Valley

The Drowned Valley A Flemish valley going under, four hundred years gone. A church tower stands drowned, and not all of the dead were let go cleanly. The Valley Village A low cluster of houses along a Flemish river, four hundred years gone. The family's hearth, and Margriet's ledger of the valley's names. The Church A small parish church with a low tower, the valley's births and deaths kept by hand in the register: the keeping before the word existed. The Rising Water Where the river climbed the family's legs the night the valley filled. No graves, no markers: the origin-grief the whole craft answers. The Churchyard Up on the rise by the church, inside a low wall of field-stone: leaning markers, wooden boards gone soft and grey, a flat slab by the porch. The valley keeps its dead here with a grave, a board and a name in the church book, and the water will undo all of it in one night and a day. The House by the Water-Meadow The lowest house in the valley, nearest the water-meadow. Every morning an old voice inside it goes down a list of names over the work of her hands. It will be the first the river reaches.

The Library

The Bleached City A future that forgot how to keep its dead at all, after a Great Forgetting. Grey, ritual, no machines that think. Neither dystopia nor utopia. The Far Side Bare rock and a long slope going up into a high, cold grey. No road, no lights, no birds, and a wind that never once gusts. The crossing sets Bram and Noor down here, short of where they were aiming. The Fold in the Rock A cut in the hill no deeper than a coal shed, where they camp with no fire, one tin cup set under a slow drip, and frost picking out every needle of the scrub. Every day spent sitting still here costs a name. The Library Four hundred years past Bram's own time, at the top of the road, a forgetting world keeps its dead on shelves: sorted and safe and not one of them loved. The Ritual Ground Salt-white open ground at the water's edge, where the year's dead are named and the nameless washed and spoken for: the body-rhyme of the drowning. The Climb Each rung of the road forward costs a carried name and a piece of the climber, and neither comes back.
