The Other Times
The Second Death
To be eaten all the way out.
The first death is the body. The second is being forgotten, eaten name by name until a person is gone for good. It is what the Takers do, and what the marks are meant to prevent.
To remember someone is to keep them. To forget them is the only death that lasts. The Takers feed on the memory of the dead, and a name they finish eating does not come back. By the end of Book One, Bram learns what the second death costs by watching it taken from him, one name at a time.
