The Other Times
The Drowned Valley
Through the glass: 1623, four centuries gone.
A Flemish valley going under the water, with a church tower drowned and a family of dead who were not all let go cleanly.
The first time Bram looks into through the glass. The water comes up over the altar, and the valley's dead are carried out by a line of Keepers that runs unbroken to the marks on his own skin. There is a water that keeps, the order will say later, a way of holding the dead that rhymes with a drowned valley.
