The Ways of Keeping
The Toll-Mark
Passage you buy with a piece of yourself.
A keeper travels on their own hand-marks and pays in the dead they carry. The Vestibule sells passage to anyone, but the fare is not coin. It is a measure of self: a memory, a sense, a year, a name.
There is more than one way through the door. The Vestibule, the neutral order at the city's edge, neither keeps nor takes. What they do is broker passage, and sell it. The fare is not money. It is a measure of the traveller's own self, bought and spent: a memory given up, a sense dimmed, a year off the far end, a name off the tongue. Every crossing leaves the traveller a little less than they were, which is why their door is used seldom and feared a little. The Vestibule are good and dangerous in equal measure. They will get you where you are going. They will simply take a piece of you as the price, and they will tell you so plainly first, which is more than the Takers ever do.
